Review: Loving Jade by Roya Carmen

Ah, this is a bittersweet review to write. Loving Jade, the third (and final) book in Roya Carmen‘s The Riverstone Series has released and, well, I have a book hangover after reading it.

Loving Jade was a bit different than the other two books in the Riverstone Trilogy. It was filled with Roya Carmen’s signature angsty characters and steamy sex scenes, but I also noticed the author’s growth as a writer in this book.  I think what struck me most about how different this book was from the other two books before it, is it’s more of a romantic suspense than the other two books and I feel this subgenre fits Roya’s writing style very, very well.

At the beginning of the story, Jade is married to a handsome, powerful man named Micheal. On the surface it appears they have a fairy tale life, but in reality Michael is controlling and abusive. Jade has had enough of his ways and flees her abusive marriage. She arrives at the Riverstone Estate and begins working through her issues with Flynn Riverstone’s use of equine therapy.

There are moments in the book that are rife with tension and emotional turmoil. Jade knows she deserves better than her abusive husband but still has moments where her heart tries to make her remember only the good times with Micheal. She also struggles with her attraction to her therapist Flynn.

The second thing that I felt was different from the other books, but again, something that made this book work well, was I loved seeing the Riverstones through the eyes of an outside character. In books one and two we get glimpses of what it’s like to be a part of the Riverstone family through the eyes of another when we’re in Aiden and August’s POV, but I felt like we got a deeper viewpoint from Jade.

I don’t want to say too much more, but I will say readers can expect hot love scenes, angsty prose and of course, a HEA. Get Loving Jade today!

I never thought I’d be able to leave Michael, but I finally worked up the courage. I’m not sure where I’m heading but I feel safe here with the Riverstones. This place is lovely and serene. There is so much beauty and love here.

Yet, I still don’t feel free – I know Michael will find me. It’s just a matter of time.

Love is the last thing I’m looking for, but Flynn is such a beautiful man, inside and out. He makes me believe that I can be stronger, that I can be fierce. He believes he can fix me with equine therapy but he has no clue how much damage has been done.

Yet, somehow, he manages to get through to me. With patience, love and understanding, he slowly peels off the hard layers of self-doubt and fear that have held me captive all these years.

Just as I finally start to get stronger, Michael tracks me down and sends us all into turmoil, and threatens not only me but the family I’ve come to love.

Author’s note:
Loving Jade contains sexual scenes and some coarse language, and is intended for a mature audience. Loving Jade also contains scenes of domestic abuse and violence which could be a trigger for some. The central theme of the story however, is female empowerment and self-love.

Loving Jade is the last book in The Riverstone Series, and can be enjoyed as a STANDALONE. However, if one intends to read all three books, it is best to read them in chronological order to avoid spoilers.

I’m cautious at first, but then I discover a beautiful, quirky man. I also see a tortured soul who lives in darkness. I know I should run, yet I can’t tear myself away. I want to discover all his secrets. I desperately want to help him. And when he draws me deeper into his strange little world, I want to stay.

Loving Ruby is book two in The Riverstone Series, by author Roya Carmen. Having already enjoyed Loving Amber, I was anticipating this book’s release and I must say that Ms. Carmen didn’t disappoint.

Ruby appeared in book one, Loving Amber, and I loved getting to know Amber’s spunky younger sister and couldn’t wait for her to get her own story. In the second installment of The Riverstone Series, readers get to know not only Ruby–a fun, fearless female–but we’re also introduced to a new alpha-beta hero. The reclusive, swoony, brooding Mr. Hyde knows when to be firm and dominant and when to be tender and vulnerable. And, oh, that combination.

August Hyde is now one of my favorite book boyfriends. He has all the essential components of an irresistible book boyfriend: he’s emotionally complex, romantic and haunted by a past tragedy he feels responsible for. Oh, and he’s also handsome and he likes his sex on the naughtier side. 😉

Ruby is an awesome, free-spirited character, but she’s also lost in a way. She’s searching for something, and just like so often happens–she doesn’t know what it is she’s looking for–until she finds it. Ruby finds what she’s looking for when she takes a job working for August Hyde, the reclusive writer she’s heard so many rumors about.

I loved seeing how Ruby helps brings August out of his reclusive shell. And it was great how he brought out a side of Ruby that made her feel capable and empowered.  Her methods work at getting the home-bound author out of his grand mansion, and those methods are quite fun to read about (hint, hint), and long the way they realize they’re better as a couple than they are apart.

Great read, 5/5 stars!

Book Review: Loving Amber by Roya Carmen

Roya Carmen’s done it again. Her new release Loving Amber is an engaging, emotional read.

After reading The Ground Rules trilogy, I wasn’t sure what to expect when I picked up Loving Amber, I only hoped I’d enjoy it as much. Let me just say, I was not disappointed! With her new release, Roya Carmen really shows off her writing chops, while taking readers on a emotion-filled journey.

A stand-alone first book in a new series, (The Riverstone Series) Loving Amber’s premise is about a woman who struggles with not only moving on two years after her husband’s unexpected death, but also her deep-seated feelings for the man she holds responsible for his demise. Those feelings she wrestles with? Blame, anger, regret, attraction and….you’ll have to find out the rest yourself!

Speaking of emotions, this book had me grappling with oh-so-many feels. There were moments when I smiled, laughed, cried and because it’s a Roya Carmen book, I squirmed in my seat and turned several shades of scarlet reading one particular scene. Hello, in-the-heat-of-the-moment-couch-sex!
Add to all of the above, there were some really beautifully, well-written lines throughout the book. I think my favorite lines are:
“The heart wants danger, the unknown. It wants to be kept on its toes. It doesn’t want to know what’s coming. The heart is a thrill-seeker.”
Say whaaaaaa? Doesn’t that just sum up love, lust and desire so perfectly? Seriously, what are you waiting for, go buy Loving Amber!!!!

Rating:  5 stars

Review: The Ground Rules Undone by Roya Carmen

The Ground Rules is a series I’ve really enjoyed. The premise–while erotic and risque in nature–didn’t mean the entire series revolved around gratuitous sex scenes. While plenty of hot scenes appeared in each of the three books, what kept the stories going and the reader on the edge of their seat (at least this reader) was the emotional turmoil that Mirella experiences.

With each book the emotional stakes become higher and in the third and final book, The Ground Rules Undone, Mirella is in quite a turbulent situation. I don’t want to spoil anything for those who haven’t read the last book–or for anyone who haven’t started the series (although if you haven’t, what are you waiting for???).

This was the book where the line was finally drawn and big decisions by Mirella were to be made. Readers would find out if #TeamGabe or #TeamWeston would prevail. I like both characters and see what each man brought out in her, so if I were in her situation, I could never choose, I guess I’m #TeamGabeston 🙂 Even though it was painful to read, at times, I couldn’t put it down. I wanted to find out what Mirella was going to do and who she was going to choose, who was going to be her forever man. Of course, you’ll have to read the book to find that out!

I will say that by the end of book three I think all of the characters involved learned something about themselves and what being a part of the whole ground rules experiment fulfilled within each of them.  Although the road getting there was winding, full of heartaches and mistakes (kind of like in real life) everyone ends up with who I feel they belong with in the end.

I truly enjoyed this series and can’t wait to see what Roya Carmen comes out with next!

Here’s a bit more about The Ground Rules Undone

TGUThe Ground Rules were impossible to follow. It was hard not to become completely consumed by the beautiful and enigmatic Weston Hanson. The heart of a romantic was not fit for this kind of exchange. So, when it ended, I was shattered, but it was all for the better…or so we thought.

The Ground Rules were rewritten, and then bent. We lied to ourselves. We told ourselves we could handle this. Not a single one of us realized just how big this was…just how devastating it could become.

And now, there are no Rules. We are undone.

Lust… infatuation…blinds you. It can tear everything apart. But sometimes, life needs to be completely torn apart before it can be mended – not just cracked at the edges, but utterly shattered, before you can truly see the mess you’ve become.

I love them both, but I can’t have them both. While one pulls me in, the other pushes me away. And when both eventually open their hearts, I must make the hardest decision of my life.

Review: The Ground Rules Rewritten by Roya Carmen

Hearts, Heroes and Happily Ever After received book two of the trilogy The Ground Rules, The Ground Rules: Rewritten, in exchange for an honest review and let’s just say, this book was devoured in about two days. It was one of those stories where the characters stay with you. When I wasn’t reading it, I was thinking about the scenes I’d just read and wondering what the characters would do next. And once I’d finished it, I couldn’t believe I’d have to wait a few more months to discover how the trilogy will end.

If you’re a fan of erotic romance and are looking for a series that pushes the envelope and packs a powerful, angsty punch look no further than The Ground Rules series by Roya Carmen.

In the first book, The Ground Rules, readers meet two couples, the average but extremely likable Gabe and Mirella and the affluent, powerful Weston and Bridget. The premise of the series is what happens when two couples meet and share a chemistry so undeniable they do what many would consider to be the unthinkable, open up their marriages.

In book one, they give the couple swapping thing a go, but with stipulations, or ground rules. Of course, things don’t go according to their plan and ultimately, at the end of book one, the foursome ends the arrangement.

In book two, that unshakable chemistry rears its head once again and, after some internal struggle by Mirella, the arrangement is back on. With this book, Roya Carmen once again proves she can write not only a steamy novel, but one laced with inner turmoil and emotional angst. I knew going in that Mirella wouldn’t be able to play it cool and let the arrangement with Weston be just sex and I’m glad that I was right.

There’s a lot that happens in this book, I felt like it was a bit faster-paced than book one, but in a good way. The book does end with a cliffhanger and I can’t wait to see how things resolve when book three comes out, (currently slated for February 2016 according to the author’s website).

I thoroughly enjoyed this hot, wild read and I give it 4.5 stars. I’m seriously eyeing the calendar (im)patiently waiting for the third book. Is it February yet? 🙂

Here’s the book blurb and buy links for The Ground Rules Rewritten.

GRRFive simple rules. And it was very simple…until it wasn’t.

It could have been much worse. We weren’t thinking straight and had put everything on the line – risking our marriages. So when Weston ended the arrangement, it was for the best – for all of us. But I was still heartbroken. I thought I’d shatter into a million pieces. I didn’t, I survived. Not only did I survive, I came out stronger and ready to move on with my life.

But then…

Weston reaches out to me. With a few soft words, a gentle touch and a lingering gaze, he crumbles all my efforts.

Neither Gabe nor I want to start this again, and we are determined to fight the temptation. But Weston and Bridget are not taking no for an answer, and the pull between all of us is still so strong.

I tell myself I can handle it this time. This time, I am in the driver’s seat. This time, I am rewriting the ground rules.
